The sacrificial anode is a metal rod usually magnesium or aluminum which helps prevent corrosion of the water heaters tank. Electrolysis eats away the anode instead of the tank.
Once the anode is completely gone the tank itself begins to corrode, so you should check your anode and replace it if needed
If your water heater was built between 1993 and 1996, it might have a defective dip tube. Ninety percent of all water heaters built from 93 to 96 used the tubes, and after a few years of exposure to hot water many of them are disintegrating and breaking off.
If you think your water heater may be affected, check the serial number on the tank. The first 4 numbers in the serial number are usually the month and year of manufacture. Affected water heaters will have the numbers 93, 94, 95, 96 or 97 in the third and fourth digit.
Flushing can extend the life!
Water heater manufacturers recommend flushing sediment from your storage type water heater periodically. How often your model needs to be flushed depends upon the quality of the water in your area. Areas with high mineral content will have to flush more often
What is sediment, and why is it a problem? The sediment is sand or other grit from a well, or any other material that has gotten into the municipal water mains. Sediment can also come into your home after the water company flushes out their lines.
Over time, your heater can accumulate this sediment consisting of sand, gravel, grit, and various mineral deposits. This buildup can reduce the amount your water heater holds, create a variety of interesting noises, and reduce the efficiency of your unit. The buildup of sediment at the bottom can harden and sometimes clog the drain valve.
Here in Missouri we have extremely hard water and it fills our tanks quickly! I can change the drain valve on your tank to a gate valve and the opening is 3/4 inch and allows large solids to be flushed! It will make it easier so you can do it yourself!
How to flush tank
Open the drain valve at the bottom of the heater allowing the water to flow out through the garden hose. If the sediment is clogging the drain valve then try closing the temperature/pressure relief valve and turn the cold inlet valve back on to "power flush" the sediment out.
In some cases the sediment hardens into large chunks that can block the drain valve. If so, then wait until everything cools down, remove the garden hose from the drain valve, remove the valve if necessary, and use a long screw driver to break up the clog. This is a very messy procedure.
Sometimes a draft will blow the pilot light out. Make sure the burner access covers are in place. Other possible causes are dirt in the gas line, loose thermocouple connections, or a defective thermocouple.
If it wont light or stay lit after a few trys then These problems should be addressed by a professional !
Sometimes some anaerobic bacteria can get into the tank and will react with the magnesium or aluminum forming hydrogen sulfide gas which is what gives a rotten egg smell. This is more common with well water than from water mains.
Some people say that replacing the magnesium rod, the more common one, with aluminum can help. There are also some special (and expensive) anodes that are supposed to solve the problem. Anther method that works is to sterilize the tank and the hot water pipes with bleach or hydrogen peroxide. However, the bacteria can come back, especially if you go away for a time and the water just sits in the heater for days or weeks. Other than the awful smell the bacteria will not harm humans.
Also if you have a well the bacteria can come from the well ! If you have case problems ground water can get into the well causing problems! There is a pressure tank that can elemate the bad rotten egg smell! They are worth every Penny to not have that smell in your water!
